Professor Guy Claxton
Guy Claxton is the UK’s leading expert on ‘learning to learn’, and on practical ways of developing young people’s learning and creative capacities. As an academic, he is the author of a dozen well-respected books on the mind, including Hare Brain, Tortoise Mind: Why Intelligence Increase When You Think Less (1997), Wise Up: The Challenge of Lifelong Learning (1999), and The Wayward Mind (2005). Guy work impacts on education policy and practice at local, national and international levels. He has been an adviser to the Primary National Strategy, the National Education Research Forum and the Campaign for Learning. He is currently Assistant Director for Learning at the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust. Guy has also been a member of the OECD High Level Forum on Education and the Brain, and has spoken at conferences across the world. No mere theorist Guy regularly works directly with teachers and schools throughout the UK, as well as overseas. Recent projects include four years’ action research with 200 teachers in Cardiff, a year with 70 early years practitioners in Oxfordshire. Teachers’ most common reactions to his presentations and workshops are ‘challenging’, ‘inspiring’ and ‘practical’. They appreciate his down-to-earth humour, as well as his eloquence and authority. Guy is currently Visiting Professor of the Learning Sciences at the University of Bristol Graduate School of Education.
